Airline plans to boost capacity with larger plane

 

Proflight Zambia will almost double its capacity in the next few months with the introduction of a 108-seat Boeing 737 aircraft to its fleet.

The twin-engine jet plane marks a milestone for Zambia’s only scheduled airline, which celebrates 22 years of operation this year.

“The addition of the 737 aircraft represents a new departure for Proflight,” said the airline’s Director of Government and Industry Affairs Capt. Philip Lemba. “Hitherto we have been operating 29-seat Jetstream 41 and 18-seat Jetstream 32 aircraft. The 737 takes us to new heights and puts Proflight firmly in the big league of regional airlines.

The leap in seating capacity will enable Proflight and its passengers to benefit from the economies of scale inherent in a large aircraft. The operating costs of a large aircraft are proportionately lower than those of a smaller plane. Airport landing fees, fuel and crew costs can thus be apportioned between greater numbers of passengers, bringing airfares down dramatically.

Super-low introductory fares are now in the pipeline in recognition of these efficiencies, and the airline is exploring options of a KR150 one-way ticket from Lusaka to Ndola, subject to successful negotiations with the National Airports Corporation (NACL) over ground handling for the aircraft.

The airline is expected to be in place for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly in Livingstone in August, and will play a pivotal role in getting delegates to the venue, and raising the nation’s standing in the eyes of the world’s tourism industry.

The airline believes that with its new aircraft it will be able to comfortably service the demands of the UNWTO event without the need for the country to bring in additional oversees carriers.

The 737 aircraft is the best-selling aircraft in aviation history. The 737 is operated by more than 500 airlines, flying to 1,200 destinations in 190 countries, and represents more than a quarter of the worldwide fleet of large commercial jet airliners. On average, some 1,250 Boeing 737s airborne at any given time around the world, with two departing or landing somewhere every five seconds, according to Flight International.

The 737-200 can fly at speeds of up to 780kph, compared with the current maximum speed of 546kph of the Jetstream 41 aircraft, reducing flight times significantly. Its cargo capacity will enable Proflight to offer increased baggage allowances on routes operated with the 737.

“The addition of the Boeing 737 to Proflight’s fleet lifts it into the ranks of the serious international airlines, making it a credible regional carrier from its Lusaka hub. The significance is enormous,” added Capt. Lemba.

Proflight is also in the process of purchasing an additional Jetstream 32/31 aircraft which will enter service in June 2013.  This increases the schedule fleet to six Jetstream aircraft: two J41s and four J32/31s.  With the growth on the Solwezi route in the past five years and the recent upgrading of the Solwezi runway Proflight has deployed the J41 aircraft onto the Lusaka/ Solwezi which doubles the number of available seats on this route.

A WIDOW of Lusaka’s Kuku Township has been sued by her son after she brought in another man in the house she finished building using her late husband’s benefits.

This is in a case in which Conrad Chali, 26, has sued his mother Jenipher Mulenga, 43, asking her to leave the house and hand over all documents related to the administration of his late father’s estate because she wants to be married.

Mulenga denied and pleaded not guilty to the charge before Boma Local Court senior Magistrate Robert Zulu.

Facts before the court were that in December 2012, Mulenga unlawfully started staying in her late husband’s house with another man claiming that she built the structure using her own money.

But Chali told the court that his mother was picked as administrator of his father’s estate and when she got his benefits she did not share with the children as stated by the law.

He told the court that his mother’s boyfriend was the person benefitting from the hard work of his late father and that all the necessary documents were burnt.

“My late father built the house for his children to benefit not our mother to bring in her boyfriend.

“It is embarrassing to all my father’s relatives and they are not happy with the action,” said Chali.

He said his younger brothers had even stopped going to school because his mother was not supporting them but she had instead concentrated on her boyfriend.

Chali said that his mother was not supposed to bring an other man in the house and sleep on the same matrimonial bed left by his father.

“I want the house to be put on rent for the benefit of all the children,” said Chali.

But Mulenga told the court that there was no way his son could drag her to court because she also contributed to the construction of the house.

She said her late husband worked as a police officer for 10 years and after his death in 2004, she was only given KR3,000 as pension, which she said was not enough.

“My son has no right to chase me out of my late husband’s house because I also contributed towards building it.

“I got the pension and it is the money I used to take him go to school until he finished his grade 12. I cannot move out of the house,” said Mulenga.

She said his son had caused a rift between her and her late husband’s relatives.

Passing judgment, senior local court magistrate Zulu said Mulenga was not supposed to stay with her boyfriend in her late husband’s house.

He said Mulenga should instead move out of the house if she wanted to get married.

Magistrate Zulu said she was not supposed to burn valuable documents, an act he described as a criminal offence.

He said both Mulenga and Chali had the right to appeal to the subordinate court or to the administrator general if not satisfied.

PrisonSIX hundred inmates have been transferred from Mukobeko Maximum Prison in Kabwe to the newly constructed Mwembeshi Maximum Prison to decongest the country’s largest correctional facility.

The prisoners were shifted yesterday amid tight security from joint security wings which provided the escort from Kabwe to Mwembeshi about 40 kilometres west of the capital city, Lusaka.

And Home Affairs Deputy Permanent Secretary Kaizer Zulu has directed police to open an inquiry into alarming reports by Muvi Television of Mukobeko prison’s security situation and the welfare of the inmates.

The operation, which was kept secret until yesterday, saw Zambia Air Force helicopters fly slightly above the convoy of Road Transport and Safety Agency sweepers and several police escort vehicles.

Business in Chibombo and part of Lusaka nearly came to a standstill as the long convoy of buses and other vehicles drove through the Kabwe-Lusaka Road to Mwembeshi Prison.

The convoy in Lusaka was a marvel to watch by hundreds of people and motorists who queued up on Lumumba and Mumbwa roads to catch a glimpse while other people took pictures with their phones.

As scores of people jostled to catch a glimpse of the convoy, the helicopters hovered over the junction of Lumumba and Mumbwa roads at low height raising a shade of dust which blew off some merchandise as vendors scampered in different directions.

The inmates who were transferred to Mwembeshi have served between seven and nine years for various offences and the Mukobeko Prison is now mostly for those on death row.

Speaking shortly before he flagged off the transfer of the inmates, Mr Zulu said the idea to remove the prisoners was President Michael Sata’s initiative to uphold human rights of inmates.

“This is not something new that all our prisons are congested. As Patriotic Front (PF) Government, we decided that we expedite the finishing or building of this building at Mwembeshi which past governments started in 1978.

“We have finished the Mwembeshi Maximum Prison and is ready for use. It is from this background that we decided to decongest Kabwe Maximum Prison and remove 600 inmates serving sentences of over seven years and above,” Mr Zulu said.

He said President Sata’s administration had worked hard to complete the new prison facility to restore sanity to prisons.

About 40 per cent of the works were carried out at Mwembeshi Maximum Prison at the time the PF Government was elected in 2011.

The new prison, which contains about 40 bunkers in each dormitory fixed with modern ablution block facilities and showers, has a capacity of 600 inmates.

There are still 1,200 inmates at Mukobeko although the 600 prisoners would now enjoy a new life at the new facility which would be commissioned tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Mr Zulu said police would open an inquiry into reports by Muvi Television about the Mukobeko Maximum Prison’s security and welfare of inmates.

Muvi Television recently claimed that at least eight inmates died as a result of the beatings by officers following the escape of three prisoners who were on the death row.

But Mr Zulu said the reports by the private media television station were not only alarming but devoid of facts about the security situation at Mukobeko and the welfare of inmates.

Earlier, Commissioner of Prisons Percy Chato described the exercise as a success and paid tribute to law-enforcement officers for the assistance rendered to relocate the inmates.

He said Mukobeko Prison had over the years been congested because of a lack of facilities and paid tribute to the Government for coming to its aid by constructing Mwembeshi Prison.

BA A380British Airways’ first Airbus A380 will fly on the “Red Carpet Route” to Los Angeles, with tickets first going on sale on 5 March 2013.

The home of Hollywood will be the inaugural destination for the first A380 to be operated by a UK airline. The double-decker super jumbo is due to be delivered to British Airways in July and seats are now on sale for flights from 15 October 2013.

In celebration, the airline is launching with an offer to Los Angeles. Fares start at £499 return in World Traveller (economy) with a special £380 upgrade available for customers wanting to move up to World Traveller Plus (premium economy). Club World (business) return fares start from £3,800 for two people (£1,900 each).

The second A380 route will be to Hong Kong, and customers can book flights now for travel from 15 November 2013. Prices start from £559 return in economy or, for an additional £380, customers can upgrade to World Traveller Plus. Club World tickets again start from £3,800 for two people (£1,900 each).

A380 enthusiasts eager to be on the very first commercial services should note that dates for these will be announced once plans for training flights are completed.

The A380 will be the largest aircraft in the British Airways fleet, accommodating 469 customers across four cabins. Customers in First will be seated at the front of the main deck. The cabin will offer 14 seats and is evolved from the current First class. Club World (business class) customers can choose from 44 seats on the main deck, or 53 seats on the upper deck. These upper deck seats will feature a new 2:3:2 configuration across the cabin. The 55 World Traveller Plus (premier economy) seats will be located on the upper deck while World Traveller (economy) customers can choose seats on both the main and upper deck. Both cabins will feature the airline’s current design, which is now flying on the new B777-300ER fleet.

The aircraft’s innovative design makes it much quieter during take-off and landing and more fuel efficient than its predecessors.  British Airways has ordered 12 for delivery by 2016 as part of a £5bn investment over five years in new aircraft, smarter cabins, elegant lounges, and new technologies to make life more comfortable in the air and on the ground.

Keith Williams, British Airways’ chief executive, said: “This will be a very special premiere. The A380 is a great aircraft that has been developed with huge amounts of British engineering ingenuity. London and Los Angeles are two world-leading cities, and we are proud to be the first airline to connect them with the A380.”

The arrival of the A380 has entailed a multi-million pound redevelopment of British Airways’ Heathrow engineering base to support maintenance of the world’s largest commercial aircraft type. This included two 24-tonne roof ‘eyebrows’ being lifted into place in one of the hangars to raise the height of the entrance to accommodate the A380’s 24-metre tailfin.

New gateway marks the 130th destination milestone for the airline

Emirates, one of the fastest growing airlines in the world, has launched its daily non-stop service from Dubai to Houari Boumediene Airport today. It is the 22nd gateway for Emirates in Africa and the airline’s 130th international destination.

Emirates also flies daily between Dubai, Lusaka and Harare.

“The launch of our operations in Algiers will provide a wealth of new travel options for customers in Algeria, who will be able to fly non-stop to our industry leading hub in Dubai and conveniently connect to points across the Middle East, the Asian Subcontinent, the Far East and Australasia,” said Adel Al Redha, Executive Vice President Engineering and Operations.

Travelers to Algiers will fly on Airbus A330-200 aircraft, with a three class configuration featuring Emirates’ award-winning service and passenger comforts, including hundreds of channels of on-demand inflight entertainment, the ability to send and receive emails and text messages, meals prepared by gourmet chefs and superior service from the airline’s international cabin crew recruited from over 130 countries.

The new daily non-stop flight to Algiers, operated by an A330-200 with a belly hold capacity of 12 tonnes, will take Emirates SkyCargo’s weekly cargo capacity into and out of the country to more than 160 tonnes. Imports into Algiers include a wide range of manufactured goods, while the top exports include frozen fish, lobsters, oil and gas equipment and palm oil.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation pioneers new approach to HIV/AIDS prevention message

Shoppers and travellers at Lusaka’s City Market and InterCity Bus Station received a Valentine’s Day surprise today (February 14) when an energetic “flashmob” of 37 young advocates moved through the area to distribute more than 72,900 free Love branded condoms and test 386 people for HIV.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) initiative was designed to mark International Condom Day and was part of a drive worldwide event to give away nearly half a million free condoms to the public in 21 countries, along with important messages on HIV prevention.

In Zambia, some 30 young people gathered for the dynamic rapid-fire distribution, which was accompanied by a free HIV testing service. The aim was to draw attention to the benefits of condoms, and also of lubrication during sexual intercourse in order to prevent condom breakages.

“The demand for condoms is not been adequately met worldwide, and the aim of the flashmob event was to highlight that,” explained AHF Prevention Program Coordinator Ntula Simwinga.

“Correct and consistent use of condoms is an important way to prevent the transmission of HIV and AIDS. We wanted to take that message to the heart of the community in central Lusaka, in a fresh, youthful manner that appealed to a new generation of sexually active men and women,” Our emphasis in 2013 is getting back to “ABC” added AHF Country Program Manager for Zambia, Victoria Kalota.

The annual event organised by AHF strives to promote condom use as a way to prevent new HIV infections and help partners protect themselves and their loved ones from sexually transmitted diseases.

AHF also encourages individuals to come forward and test for HIV so that all HIV-positive people can receive full care and treatment.

In addition to condom use, AHF advocates an increased focus on sexual abstinence and being faithful, in conjunction with convenient, free HIV testing and universal access to anti-retroviral treatment as an integral part of the global fight against HIV/AIDS.

Something transformational has been happening online: African voices have begun populating social media, quickly becoming the undisputed champions of development punditry. No longer are we faced with what the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie called “the danger of a single story”. Twitter, Facebook and other forms of social media are bringing African voices and new, varied narratives to the forefront. And, what’s even more remarkable, is that these online platforms are not being used for simple pontification and acerbic commentary (although there’s a fair bit of that as well). These tools are also being used to replace staid development paradigms, by organising and developing African-driven institutions.

One form of social media in particular has had a noticeable effect. Twitter’s short messaging network has revolutionised political discourse and rewritten the rules of international development dialogue. Controversial development projects such as the #1millionshirts campaign (pdf – see page 11) and Invisible Children’s Kony 2012 video came under heavy diaspora scrutiny online. Invisible Children’s video campaign to capture the notorious Ugandan rebel Joseph Kony became a victim of its own success and was dismissed as “over-simplified” and “misleading” by many prominent voices in the diaspora. Likewise, the negative feedback against the #1millionshirts campaign – a project to dump 1 million T-shirts into the African marketplace – was so powerful that founder Jason Sadler pulled the plug on it.

With social media bringing African voices to the fore, gone are days when do-gooders can launch misguided development projects with impunity. This, in turn, has encouraged more collaboration and shared learning. After killing his project, Sandler took the initiative of engaging with African diaspora, including myself, to understand better how he could put his talent to good use.

New institutions for economic development

Not only are we, the African diaspora, challenging the underpinnings of international development – it’s no longer the west helping the rest – but through Facebook and Twitter, informal gatherings and discussions have grown into permanent, transformational institutions. Let me illustrate: in 2009, I gave my first talk at Africa Gathering in London after hearing about this new initiative during a Twitter debate. Today, Africa Gathering events are held annually in Africa, Europe and America. The TED-style talks provide a platform for the diaspora and anyone with an interest in Africa to share their projects and solutions for the continent.

It was at one of these gatherings that I met Ida Horner, a Ugandan businesswoman in the UK. In 2010, we teamed up to launch Villages in Action, a development conference live-streamed from a Ugandan village. It was a collaborative response to celebrity-heavy events in New York and Washington DC, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the millennium development goals. With the poor taking the role of nameless statistics, charts and figures, we decided to give them a face by bringing the microphone to them. Social media injected their voice into the global goals discussion. To my knowledge, Villages in Action was the first diaspora-led development project fully crowd-funded and executed through online engagement.

The African diaspora is also using social media to raise funding for projects on the continent. Last year, Africans in Diaspora, an organisation on whose board I sit, raised $40,000 from 234 contributors to fund community development programs on the continent. This crowdfunding strategy for community development is a new and welcome second act, realising $60bn annually. Where we were previously sending money home to support one-to-one solutions, we are now crowd-sourcing assistance to strengthen service delivery mechanisms in our communities for all to benefit.

Where do we go from here?

The full impact of Africa’s diaspora engaging intellectually and materially in the continent’s development needs more time to mature fully. Although we contribute more in remittances than foreign direct investment and are fast becoming the voice of the continent, we don’t have a solid role in the continent’s governance – yet. Changing the political landscape is going to take much longer than organising a fundraiser from afar. To really have an effect on the political process, we will need to go beyond sideline commentary. We need to engage in the political process, both at the international and local levels. This, however, will take time to accomplish. As much as we bicker about corruption, intransigent dictatorships, and lack of civil services, our most effective role – for now – may be limited to economic development and advocacy. So long as our collective voice and our money continue to engage the continent, our political influence won’t be far behind. Thanks to social media, this is a task we are beginning to take on – and one we must take on collaboratively.

As the #1millionshirts story suggests, social media can also be a great tool for cross-border collaboration. As we begin to leverage the power of social media and uncensored, international discourse, we should be careful not to alienate those with experience and expertise. There’s a famous African proverb: “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” While it’s clear that “Africa, for Africa, by Africa” is the new mantra on social media, our collective intelligence and financial muscle are not nearly enough for the journey ahead. We will need all the help we can get.

British Airways plcBritish Airways is set to make a number of changes to its northern summer 2013 schedule from 31st March including a new route, terminal changes and frequency increases.

The airline will start weekend services from Heathrow to Ibiza from 27th April thanks to the popularity of the services the airline already operates to the White Isle from both London City and Gatwick airports. The flights are on sale now from £66 one-way.

This is in addition to new Spanish flights from Heathrow to Palma (starting 31st March) and from Gatwick to Lanzarote (starting 31st March) and Tenerife (starting 29th March). Prices to Tenerife and Lanzarote start from £83 one-way return and to Palma from £99 one-way.

The airline will also move its new Heathrow flights to Leeds Bradford and Zagreb from Terminal 1 to Terminal 5.

The Leeds flights will also be re-timed to better suit business travellers with earlier morning departures in both directions.  From the start of the summer programme on 31st March the schedule from Leeds Bradford will be reduced from four to three flights a day, with the lunchtime and early afternoon slots combined.  However, the move to T5 and the new timings will benefit both business and leisure travellers who will be able to easily connect with some of the important long-haul and European destinations.

The winter schedules to Dublin and Tripoli will continue into the summer offering up to 53 flights per week to the Republic of Ireland’s capital and three flights a week to Libya’s.

Travellers booking a shorthaul fare with British Airways can take advantage of the airline’s hand luggage allowance and carry on a good-sized suitcase (56cm x 45cm x 25cm) with no weight limit, plus a handbag or laptop bag as well as checking in a bag weighing up to 23kgs. The airline also offers customers allocated seating in advance, priority boarding for families, complimentary food and drink, flights to convenient airports, high levels of customer service and a frequent flyer programme that rewards them with Avios and tier points.

On the airline’s longhaul network, Almaty in Kazakhstan will receive a non-stop service from 2nd April 2013. The route will also be moved from Terminal 1 to Terminal 5 and benefit from the introduction of a three-class aircraft. Customers will now be able to select the World Traveller Plus cabin, as well as Club World or World Traveller.

As previously announced, British Airways is also due to start flights from Gatwick to Sri Lanka from 31st March with prices starting from £604 return, and flights from Heathrow to Chengdu in China from 22nd September with prices starting from £742 return.

Wright’s very first cookbook, “Cucina Pariso: The Heavenly Food of Sicily.” The cuisine of this island is unique, with many Arab influences – lots of sweet spices, sweet and savory combinations, saffron, almonds and other nuts. Sicilians even have a signature couscous dish, a fish couscous they call Cuscusù.”

Cauliflower is a favorite vegetable there, though the variety used most often is the light green cauliflower that we can find in some farmers’ markets in the United States. I adapted a couple of Wright’s pasta recipes, changing them mainly by reducing the amount of olive oil and anchovies enough to lighten the sodium and caloric values significantly without sacrificing the flavor and character of the dishes.

I didn’t just look to Sicily for recipes for this nutrient-rich cruciferous vegetable, but I didn’t stray very far. One recipe comes from Italy’s mainland, and another, a baked cauliflower frittata, is from its close neighbor, Tunisia, fewer than 100 miles away across the Strait of Sicily.

Here are five new ways to cook with cauliflower.

maseboTourism and Arts Minister Silvia Masebo has named a nine member board of the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to be chaired by prominent farmer Guy Robinson.

Members of the new board include permanent secretary in the ministry of tourism, Charity Mwansa, Ms. Chasiya Kazembe, from the ministry of finance, former Zambia Tourism Board chairperson Timothy Mushibwe and Mrs. Anita Balemu.

Other members of the board include Chieftainess Mwape, Senior Chief Inyambo Yeta and Yonous Mitta.

Justice Minister Winter Kabimba, who is also Patriotic Front Secretary General, has also been appointed to serve on the new ZAWA board.

This is the third board Mr. Kabimba is serving on, adding on to the ERB and the ZAMTEL boards.

Tourism Minister Silvia Masebo states that with the new board in place, she is optimistic that ZAWA will now be proactive enough to ensure that the country’s wildlife is conserved.

She was speaking in Lusaka this morning during a breakfast meeting with the Tourism Council of Zambia.

Ms. Masebo notes that her ministry will also ensure that all vacant positions at ZAWA are advertized to accord qualified persons to fill up the positions.

She adds that the cleanup of ZAWA will continue even under the new board and will be extended to all the 10 provinces.

And Tourism Council of Zambia chairperson Felix Mulenga has called on government to expedite the introduction of a national airline.

Mr. Mulenga says the country cannot always be dependent on foreign airlines.
