‘Let’s have one teachers’ union’
THE Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) in Southern Province has appealed to the Registrar of Societies to stop registering new teacher unions to foster unity of purpose among teachers.
ZNUT provincial trustee Ignatius Mindando said the unity of purpose that teacher unions were talking about could only be achieved if there was one teacher union unlike having many unions without harmony.
“At this time, we as unions, we are talking about unity of purpose, where in future we need to have one teacher union unlike the case today. We would urge the Registrar of Societies to stop registering new teacher unions,” he said.
Mr Mindando was speaking in Zimba District at the weekend during this year’s commemoration of Teachers’ Day under the theme, Teacher, Take a Lead in Quality Education.
He however, commended the Patriotic Front (PF) Government for increasing teachers’ salaries and other improved conditions of services which he said were making a difference.
He also urged the Government to dialogue with stakeholders in resolving the pension scheme on how the money would be paid to pensioners like teachers and also on the issue of retirement age.
Zimba District Commissioner Golden Nyambe called on teachers to remain focused in imparting quality education as Government explored other various empowerment incentives.
