Tourism and Arts Minister, Sylvia Masebo says she will soon table before cabinet appeals to waive Visa fees for tourists visiting Zambia.

Ms Masebo says this follows appeals by some Lodge owners in Livingstone who have told informed her that tourist arrivals have been dwindling due to prohibitive tourist visa fees currently pegged at 50 US dollars per person.

The Minister says she will consult widely before taking the matter to cabinet for possible consideration.

Ms Masebo held a meeting with Lodge owners in Livingstone to discuss cross cutting issues affecting the hospitality industry.

And Ms Masebo says the Ministry of Health has written to the World Health Organisation demanding that Zambia be removed from a list of countries affected by Yellow Fever because the country is not affected by the disease.

This came after Kuba Crafts representative Frederick Wilson said the yellow fever requirement and Visa fees have proved counterproductive in boosting tourist arrivals.

Mr Wilson says there is also need to harmonise the various payments demanded from tourists.

  1. Mr Jere, you say you are in Swindon UK. you of all people should be honest and sincere wiht yourself. The government has raised travel taxes for anyone travelling from Uk and for instance a ticket to lusaka doing at £700.00 the tax on that ticket would almost be £300.00. The UK government is currently squizzing everyone in the name of we are in this together. It beggers belief that you are advocating for a visa fee waiver and yet this is how the Zed governemnt will raise money. Do you know hoiw much people have to pay for a visa to come to UK almost £80.00 and some tourist coming to Zed is complaining about $150.00 dollars. First of all do those Muziungus who own the lodges even pay tax in Zed?
Please be real and support your country not.

  2. @ George Jere Zambias Revenue from international tourists grew from US$29 million in 1997 to $146 million in 2008, so it is on an upward trend. The tourist industry grew visitors came into the country with Visa FEES in place .I dont know what logic or what reasoning you use, abolishing visa fees is a recipe for disaster.
In 2010, Zambia’s earnings from tourism was about $125 million, while in Zimbabwe it was $634 million, in Tanzania it was $1.2 billion and Kenya received $1.6 billion.
Kenya in that year had the largest revenue. All these countries have Visa fees in place .So George do your home work before embarassing yourself on a public forum , you should join PF am sure they will need you in their ” THINK TANK “.A party common but with no sense

@ MASEBO IF YOU DO READ AND NOT JUST LISTEN TO A FEW INDIVIDUALS WHO WANT TO ENRICH THEMSELVES DO THE RIGHT THING .YOU CANNOT GET RID OF VISA FEES.ASK THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT ABOUT HOW THEY ARE ABLE TO MAKE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS .MASEBO YOU ARE NOT CAPABLE AS A TOURIST MINISTER.THIS JOB REQUIRES SOME ONE THAT WILL SPEARHEAD AND DRIVE ZAMBIA’S TOURIST INDUSTRY IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION .A STONE THROWING CADRE LIKE YOU WILL ONLY DAMAGE THAT SECTOR

  3. Masebo should not pamper to the whims of stupid tourists. They are coming here to see one of the wonders of the world. Why the heck should they pay pittance to see the falls

  4. AT George Jere have you ever been abroad , take a trip or apply for a visa to the USA OR UK .See how much you will .Stop trying to justify this .Visa fees shouldnt be waived because a few individuals want to prosper at the expense of Zambia .They are there for a reason , other wise we will get any tom dick and harry visiting our country.

    • yes I live in Swindon UK.
Sandy the problem is we need visitors as tourists to raise funds to generate employment ,give business to our lodges and hotel etc all for the benefit of Zambia ..

  5. why fine a visitor is beyond me.it’s one of those old socialist concepts of raising foreign exchange.
The fine although small is in bad taste and should be removed.

The big picture ;tourists spend more than a thousand on a single visit.

    • Jere you sound naive just wonder how old you are. Which country including Congo DRC will allow visitors not to pay for visas. What Zambia needs is makert itself well and it’s product not cutting corners.

  6. VISA FEES SHOULD’NT BE WAIVED .ZAMBIA IS NOT A CHARITY

well said Mwangala.Masebo shouldnt waste government’s time .Tourist should pay for Visa fee there is not debate about it .Zambia shouldnt be used by fORIEGN INVESTORS TO ENRICH THEMSELVES .Yes what sort of a tourist cannot pay £50.00.MASEBO THERE IS NOTHING TO CONSULT ABOUT MASEBO , YOU WERE EMPLOYED BY YOUR BOSS TO DO YOUR JOB .
When Zambian go abroad they pay through their noses why should foreigners visiting zambia be a special exception .

    • Very well said no wonder a tourist can get to Kenneth kaunda international airport, and Immigration will ask them how long do you want to saty and if they don;’t have an address to go to they just use anyones address. No wonder ma nai are now taking over in zed and people are just watching this go on. I was in Zed last year and I got a shock 99% of passengers on the BA flight were all foreigners. This really intrigued me so I asked on ghanaian lady what the attraction was all about? she said my dear all the money is here you lot in England are just wasting your time. This got me thinking all the way on the plane and I saw what she was talking about that is why the the foreign tourists want the visa waived because they know how easy it is for them to make money whilst zanbians are napping

  7. Visa fees should’nt be waived away , go to the Usa or come to the UK you pay for visas .If the western countries waive away visa fees for zambian yes then do the same to them .Lets not be fooled by some foreign investors who are only looking at their own interest. Our tourist industry is good so people must pay good money to come and see Zambia’s tourist attractions .Masebo should’nt put anything on the table its a waste of time .

    • if you waive visas for the first world everyone will be in their country..
You are doing so in a third world country like Zambia because you want to generate more income to cater for your massive disadvantaged group.
Don’t be conceited !!! It’s not right to have visa fees.
