3 Chinsali FRA agents nabbed

THE  Government Joint Investigations Team has arrested three Food Reserve Agency (FRA) agents in Chinsali for theft by agent contrary to the laws of Zambia.

And in Kabwe, police are holding five people including an FRA employee over the theft of over 4, 000 FRA maize bags worth millions of kwacha following an operation.

In the Chinsali case, investigations team spokesperson Namukolo Kasumpa said Davis Kayame, 50, an assistant warehouse manager of Katondwe depot and Fanwell Bwalya a Katondwe depot buyer, both of Seedfarm area in Chinsali District allegedly issued eight fake produce received notes (PRN) valued at K79, 560,000 to two named women purporting to have supplied maize to FRA when in fact not.

The investigations team also seized a hammer mill and generator belonging to Edward Sinkala, a secretary of Chunga satellite depot in Chinsali in relation to theft of FRA maize at the Chunga depot.

The assets were suspected to be proceeds of crime and Mr Sinkala was currently at large.

She said Loyed Melele 25, a depot buyer also of Chunga depot has also been arrested for theft.

The three were currently in police custody at Chinsali Police Station and are scheduled to appear in court soon.

In the Kabwe incident, an FRA worker and three others were yesterday picked up for interrogation for theft of 4000×50 kg FRA maize bags at Chowa depot while a business executive from Makululu township was found with over 30 bags of maize which was being removed from FRA bags and repacked in plain bags.

Central Province Police chief Solomon Jere who confirmed the development, said both cases were being investigated thoroughly to ensure those engaged in such acts faced the law.

Dr Jere said the police was ready to assist the Government bring sanity in the province which of late had experienced rampant maize theft.

Meanwhile, in Mumbwa District police have arrested and charged six people from FRA for obtaining money by false pretences and theft by servant amounting to over K2.1 billion involving 22,000 bags of maize.

Those arrested are Dazak Abba 39, a business executive who is charged with obtaining money by false pretences involving K97.5 million and Mable Chola Chipasha 29, a secretary at ZAWA who was charged with theft by servant involving K97.5 million for 1,500 bags of maize.

Dr Jere identified other accused persons as Spailous Mweemba 28, an FRA senior checker who was charged with theft by servant.

Others are Evans Muyoma 22, a shop keeper and Principal Mukombo 32, who have both been charged with obtaining money by false pretences amounting to over K19 million for 306 bags of maize while Brenda Kalabo has been charged with obtaining money by false pretences for 306 bags of maize amounting to over K19 million.

He said the accused persons claims to have supplied maize to FRA when infact not and that 22,000 by 50kg of maize have not been accounted for and that the suspects would appear in court soon.

And Steven Chirwa yesterday appeared before Principal Resident Magistrate Collins Lunda who sentenced him to four years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing maize belonging to the FRA.

Particulars of the offence were that on April 4, 2012 Chirwa,40,of Mangwana- Masala, under his company Spare rite was contracted to transport 2525x50kg bags of maize from Madando FRA satellite depot to the industrial area in Masala but decided to steal 440x50kg bags of maize valued at K30,800,000.00. / times of zambia
