Zambia Mine Union calls for reinstatement of windfall tax
By Zumani Katasefa
National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) secretary general Goodwell Kaluba has urged the PF government to reinstate the windfall tax on mine owners.
Mr. Kaluba said in the run up to the September 20 general elections, the reintroduction of the windfall tax on mine operators was one of the prominent promises the PF made to Zambians and wondered the government is now silent about the matter.
He said it was a good move to increase the mineral royalties from three percent to six percent, but it was going to make much sense if government re-introduced the windfall tax.
And the Mine workers union of Zambia MUZ has also condemned government’s failure to re-introduce the windfall tax. MUZ President Aswell Munyenyembe wondered why the government has not talked about the windfall tax in its 2012 budget./ENDS
