Zambia: Expedite justice – Judge Makungu

Kitwe High court Judge Catherine Makungu has urged state prosecutors to hasten the clearance of criminal cases so that they reduce on the number of people being reminded in prison for a long period.

Judge Makungu says it was against the laws of Zambia to keep suspects in custody for a long time without producing adequate evidence to allow quick expedition of cases.

The Judge was speaking on Monday when she opened her high court criminal session.

She said she was not happy that cases were taking long to conclude as the practice was causing congestion in state prisons.

And Chief Superintendent Officer Patrick Mundia Nawa says there is an urgent need for new or extended prison facilities in the province to decongest prisons.

Presenting a report on the state of prisons in the province, Mr Nawa said there were currently 3,792 inmates in prisons.

He said the number was way above the capacity of the prisons.

He stated that Kanfimsa prison has the highest number of inmates with 2,308 while Kansenshi prison in Ndola is second with 425 inmates and Mufulira has the least number of inmates with 199.

Chingola prison has the highest number of juvenile inmates which has 27.

Mr Nawa also adds that female prison officers have been enforced to look at matters concerning female inmates at Kanfimsa prison.
