Zambia should adopt legislation on Freedom of Information

Visiting Freedom of Information Experts say there is need for Zambia to adopt legislation on Freedom of Information.

Canada’s Centre for Law and Democracy Executive Director TOBY MENDEL says this is because currently the right to access information by members of the public is limited.

Mr. MENDEL told ZNBC news in an interview that Freedom of Information is a public issue and not a media one.

And South Africa’s Open Democracy Advice Centre Deputy Executive Director MUKELANI DIMBA said legislation on Freedom of Information is an important tool towards advancing the country’s development and social justice.

Mr. DIMBA said there is need for Zambia to conduct public awareness on the proposed piece of legislation.

Mr. DIMBA and MENDEL are in the country to discuss the proposed piece of legislation on Freedom of Information.
