“Fisi” Retires After Four Decades Of ‘Service’: Thank God I’m Alive
Malawi Voice – Steve Maletho of Village headman Lomola in Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo district has officially announced his retirement as ‘fisi’, a career which he fruitfully indulged on since 1967.
Fisi is a Lhomwe tradition where by a man is hired to have sex with someone’s wife, if that husband is believed to be impotent.
“I have been acting as fisi since 1967, and I consider myself a professor in as afar as satisfying women in bed is concerned. But all good things must come to an end, and thanks to Crecom (Creative community mobilization) that I am constructively retiring.
“I have thirteen children with my long time wife, and though age is catching up with me, but I am not slowing down in the confinement of my matrimonial bedroom,” he said
Maletho said this recently when Crecom engaged his community on the campaign to wipe out some cultural beliefs and tradition that could be accelerating spread of HIV and AIDS
Maletho confessed that he had been rendering his ‘services’ with full blessings of his wife and thanked God for protecting him
“My wife was aware of everything and used to ask me kaya bambo mwayendako bwanji (how was it like), every time I came back from duty. She could not fight me because it was part of deeply rooted culture along Thyolo, Mulanje and Phalombe districts.
“I am very thankful that God protected me through out, of course I am yet to go for VCT (Voluntary Counseling and Testing) with my wife to establish my zero-status,” he said
He said though younger blood may wish to take over, but should be doing so at their own risk with HIV and AIDS around.
“I had a wonderful career as AIDS was not around, in those days, I was only minding Gonorrhea and Syphilis which were curable,” he concluded./Malawi Voice
