Zambian land minister fired over corruption scandal
Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has with immediate effect terminated the appointment of Gladys Nyirongo as land minister, state-owned Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) reported on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Mwanawasa appointed Bradford Machila, who is currently deputy minister of justice, to replace Nyirongo whose ministry was accused by the president as the most corrupt one in his administration.
This was announced by Mwanawasa's special assistant for press and public relations John Musukuma in a statement released this evening, according to ZANIS.
Nyirongo's dismissal came shortly after the revelation of corruption scandals surrounding several senior officials in the ministry..
Last week the ministry suspended its permanent secretary Mukuka Zimba and four accountants to pave way for investigations.
The appointed acting permanent secretary, who is also commissioner of lands, Fritone Sichone is also reported to have allegedly been involved in illegal land allocation.
